OK - I know I've been really bad about keeping up on my blog. Brenda chided me yesterday about how I need to blog more. There are a lot of ideas I have had but, then I get too busy, etc, etc. My birthday was Sept 11 and I got to go fishing in the High Uintas, then I took grandma to dinner at the Texas Roadhouse for some Ribeye steak that I had been craving. My family really overdid it on the presents, but I really appreaciated everything. My children got together and got me a chainsaw and I've been dreaming about cutting down the plumb tree and building my two car garage!

But, that is only a dream. Bill thinks I should get a shoot from this plumb tree and plant it and while it's growing I can save my money for the new garage. Great idea. Bethany wanted to know if I had yet even started the chainsaw and I had to admit that even though I had got it all put together and adjusted properly that I hadn't started it yet. I needed to get some chain oil and a new gas can because the the gas has to specially mixed. So, duely prompted, I took care of the details and cut up some wood.

As you can see it cuts like a hot knife through butter!

So what has been keeping me so busy? I guess you'll have to stay tuned for my next installment as I tell how I'm hunting down Davis cousins.

Nice work with the chain saw. Although I am worried for the Davis cousins....................because you said you were hunting them down right below a picture of you and a chain saw.

Book Review

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Carolyn got me this book for Christmas and I highly recommend it. It is a story of rising higher than expected, falling and then redemption. It is the true story of Louis Zampareni, a son of Italian immigrants who finds that he has a gift for running and eventually competes in the Berlin Olympic in the mile. He was expected to be the first man to break the four minute mile, but the war came and he found himself in the Army Air-corp as a Bombardier. After many successful bombing missions a plane, that they are asked to take out and search for a missing plan, crashes into the Pacific. He and two others survive for 47 days in a rubber life raft only to be picked up by the Japanese. He spends the rest of the war as a POW and endures unimaginable treatment. When he is finally rescued and sent home his life falls apart and he becomes and alcoholic. But, he meets Billy Graham and accepts Christ and it changes his life forever. He is still alive and a movie is in the works.

Hugo - the movie

As you can see, a few years ago I wrote a review of the book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret". Then, last week Carolyn & I rented the movie and very much enjoyed it. It is well done and follows the book closely. The graphics and sets are just great. A very nice story.

Yeaning for the Living God by F. Enzio Busche

Enzio was born in Germany in 1930 and drafted into the Germany army at age 14. He tells of his capture by the Americans and how well he was treated by them. But, when his family is finally re-united they have to struggle everyday just to keep from starvation. Their home was rubble and the family worked very hard to rebuild it. During this time he started searching for the truth about God. Germany had become quite godless after the war and even having good morals was looked down upon. He yearned to find the truth and after a near death experience he commited himself to finding the truth and the living God. His search eventually brings him in contact with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but it takes him years of study before he accepts the gosple and is baptized. His baptism is just the beginning of a long journey as he continues to seek God and His will. He recounts many miraculous events is his life as he journeys all over the world in his many callings for the church.
It was a very uplifting and insightful read. I would definitely recommend it.

Killer Angels by Michael Shaara

This book was recommended by Bethany and I really enjoyed it. It is not one that any of my grandchildren would enjoy at this time of their lives, but maybe when they get to high school it could help them understand a little bit of what the country went through in the Civil War. It's the story of the Battle of Gettysburg told from both sides of the conflict. It is based on letters, books and lectures given by the men who fought in the battle, so there is very little fictionalization.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Just finished reading a great little book. Actually, it was a very thick book, but it's thickness is due to it's uniqueness. The title of the book is "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick. It uses black and white drawings to tell a lot of the story, which is why the book is so thick (525 pages). But, it's a quick read and I think a 8 or 9 year old would enjoy reading it.
The story takes place in the Paris train station and involves the interesting lives of real people mixed with the main character, Hugo Cabret, a 12 year old boy. Everything in the story is absolutely true, except for the main character and a girl he meets. So, as you read it you get a little education of the early history of film making. When you finish the book you may want to YouTube "A Trip to the Moon".
